Two now dead from five-vehicle crash

A five-vehicle car crash on U.S. Route 23 near the Island Creek intersection at around 8 a.m. last Monday, September 8 resulted in the death of 58-year-old Walter Gearhart. On September 17, another  person in the crash, Kimberly Thompson, also died from injuries resulting from the crash.

Officials said that two other people aside from Gearhart and Thompson, whose identities the authorities did not reveal publicly, had been transported to Pikeville Medical Center in Kentucky by TranStar Ambulance for the treatment of their injuries, which ranged from non-life-threatening to critical.

Police Captain Chris Edmonds said the driver of a 10-wheeler truck lost control of his vehicle just before it reached the traffic lights in the southbound lanes and collided with at least four passenger vehicles.

The Pikeville Police Department and Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement are still trying to get to the root cause of the accident.

The attorneys at the Sampson Law Firm send their deepest condolences to those who have been affected by this tragic vehicle crash.
