What is informed consent?

Before a doctor performs a medical procedure or prescribes a course of treatment for a patient, they must first obtain that patient’s informed consent in order to be free from liability for any consequences that may arise. This means that they must inform the patient of any relevant information about the proposed treatment and alternative treatment options that could potentially affect the patient’s decision to agree to undergo treatment.
